Swine Flu
Information on Swine Flu

Here are some important things to know regarding Swine Flu.
We have all heard and seen reports on the spread of Swine Flu around the world. However, we are not seeing an increase in the number of patients coming into our ED and Urgent Care. If you feel like you need to see a doctor because of your flu symptoms, please let the staff know before you come in so that necessary precautions can be taken.
While there have been two confirmed cases in the southern part of the state, there have been no suspected cases of type A (H1N1) Swine Influenza in our region.
This is not new territory for Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, other hospitals, or the health department. Plans and protocols are in place for these types of situations. Drills and training takes place on an ongoing basis.
The management of type A (H1N1) swine influenza is no different than the management of the seasonal flu. Good hygiene is the best defense, including frequent handwashing.
Influenza includes respiratory symptoms. There are standard protocols related to patients with respiratory symptoms that the hospital uses every day. An example would be asking a patient with a cough to wear a mask. This helps prevent respiratory viruses from spreading.
We are working closely with the Michigan Department of Community Health to receive updated information and are following guidelines issued by the CDC.
This is a fluid situation, for further information and updates you can contact your local health department or the CDC Web site. cdc.gov/swineflu.
